Keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery

Diagnostic laparoscopy in Vijayawada | Dr. Naresh Veeranki

When scans and tests don't explain ongoing abdominal pain, a diagnostic laparoscopy lets the surgeon look directly inside through a small cut, and often treat the cause in the same sitting.

Also known as: exploratory laparoscopy, keyhole investigation

A word from Dr. Naresh

Keyhole surgery has changed what recovery looks like. Operations that once meant a long cut and a week in hospital are now done through small cuts, with most people walking the same day.

But I don't recommend keyhole surgery for its own sake. I recommend it when it gives you the same result with less pain, and I'll tell you when open surgery is the safer choice.

What is diagnostic laparoscopy?

When scans don't explain ongoing pain, a camera look inside can find and treat the cause. It's considered only after less invasive tests.

How it's treated, from simplest to most involved

  1. 1

    Look and biopsy

A camera check, with tissue samples sent for testing.

  2. 2

    Diagnose and treat

Releasing adhesions or removing the appendix during the same procedure.

  3. 3

    Plan the next step

If a condition needs specialist care, you're referred with clear findings.

The complete guide: everything you need to know

Everything you need to know about diagnostic laparoscopy, in one place.

1Are you an ideal candidate for diagnostic laparoscopy?

Suitability is decided at an in-person examination, with a review of your history and reports.

It may be advised for

  • Long-standing abdominal pain with no clear cause on scans
  • Suspected adhesions (bands of scar tissue) after previous surgery
  • Fluid in the abdomen of unknown cause
  • Taking a biopsy from a suspicious area
  • Assessing certain abdominal injuries

When to wait or plan carefully

  • Severe heart or lung disease makes general anaesthesia risky
  • Extensive previous abdominal surgery, where open surgery may be safer
2Step-by-step: how it is done
  1. 1

    Before

Blood tests, and a scan if needed, plus an anaesthesia check.

  2. 2

    Fasting

No food for 6 hours before surgery.

  3. 3

    The surgery

Under general anaesthesia, through small cuts of 5 to 10 mm using a camera.

  4. 4

    After

Walking the same day; home in 1 to 2 days for most operations.

What affects the cost

  • Type of treatment. Medicines, a clinic procedure, laser, keyhole or open surgery each cost differently.
  • Hospital and room. Day-care, general ward or private room changes the total.
  • Tests and scans. Blood tests, ultrasound or CT, only if they're needed and not already done.
  • Anaesthesia. Local anaesthesia costs less than spinal or general.
  • Health insurance. Most policies cover these treatments; waiting periods and room limits vary.

6Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Why do I need surgery just to find the cause?

It's considered only after less invasive tests. Some conditions, such as adhesions, small deposits on the abdominal lining or certain infections, simply don't show up on scans.

What if nothing is found?

A normal result is still useful. It rules out many serious causes and helps direct further care.

Can the problem be treated at the same time?

Often, yes. Adhesions can be released, a biopsy taken, or a diseased appendix removed. This is discussed and agreed with you beforehand.

Is it risky?

It's a low-risk procedure. Risks include infection and bleeding, and rarely injury to the bowel or blood vessels.

How long does it take?

Usually 30 to 60 minutes, longer if treatment is carried out.

Will I have a scar?

Two or three small scars of 5 to 10 mm that fade over time.

When will I get the results?

What was seen is explained the same day; biopsy results take about 5 to 7 days.

What is the cost of diagnostic laparoscopy in Vijayawada?

The cost depends on the treatment you need, the hospital and room type, any tests, and the anaesthesia used. Dr. Naresh Veeranki gives a clear, itemised estimate after examination, before anything is booked, and most health insurance policies cover diagnostic laparoscopy. Call or WhatsApp +91 83338 26666 for an estimate.
